UTeach students who began the program but did not finish prior to leaving UT (with or without a degree) are welcome to return to the program. Students must repeat the most recent EDC course if the gap is more than 4 years. This includes Knowing and Learning (EDC 365C), Classroom Interactions (EDC 365D), and Project-Based Instruction (EDC 365E).

All returning students must be readmitted to the University of Texas at Austin. Students with less than the required 2.5 GPA should make an advising appointment to discuss access to UTeach courses. Students with less than a 2.5 GPA must petition to take EDC 365E and must pass the Pre-Admission content exam per UTeach policy. Students may also need to take additional course work in the content area to raise their cumulative GPA per UTeach policy. Returning students are encouraged to make an advising appointment to discuss their options with the UTeach program. Call 512 232 2770 to make an appointment.

Students have the option to appeal particular situations related to UTeach academic policies with the exception of the portfolio requirement for Apprentice Teaching. Contact your UTeach advisor to discuss your options.

The policy that limits TExES exam authorization to only those students admitted to Apprentice Teaching cannot be appealed.

For permission to register, students must submit an application, have a cumulative UT GPA of 2.5, a passing score on the preliminary portfolio, and be either registered for or have completed with a grade of at least a C- all required courses (for the degree and certification). Students with less than a 2.5 GPA must appeal to take Apprentice Teaching. Students must appeal for permission to take any other course with EDC651S and UTS170. See your UTeach advisor for details. Appeals are granted only in exceptional cases. Students should plan accordingly.

IMPORTANT: Students with less than the required 2.5GPA at the start of their PBI semester must take the Pre-Admission Content Test in that semester. See your UTeach advisor for details.

In order to receive access to the required courses, students must also attend an Apprentice Teaching orientation session. Students who do not attend a mandatory orientation session may not receive a placement.

GPAs will be checked again at the end of the semester. A 2.5 cumulative GPA is a State requirement and cannot be waived.

A requirement for certification is to take and pass two tests, known as the TExES exams. One is Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities and the other corresponds to your certification area, such as 7-12 Mathematics or 7-12 Science. Only those students admitted to Apprentice Teaching receive authorization to take the exams. At this point, you will have earned a grade of at least a C- in almost all of the required UTeach courses as well as most of the courses in your content specialty. Completion of this course work is intended to prepare students to do well on the TExES exams. In the Apprentice Teaching seminar (UTS170), you will receive guidance on how to study for the exams, as well as more information about supporting materials available to you.
