Final Field Experience Terms and Definitions


  • Apprentice Teacher (AT) – The candidate who is completing a semester long student teaching experience to complete their certification requirements.
  • Candidate – The university student currently enrolled in the teacher preparation program and seeking certification.
  • Clinical Faculty – The university faculty assigned to coordinate the final field experience for candidates.  Clinical Faculty are trained as Field Supervisors and observe all candidates in the field during the final field experience.
  • Cooperating Teacher – A teacher in the field hosting and supporting an Apprentice Teacher.
  • Educator Preparation Program (EPP) – A program designed to prepare individuals to become certified teachers.
  • Field Observer – An educator who observes, coaches, and evaluates the candidates during the field placement.  The Field Observers are trained and certified Field Supervisors and serve as communication liaisons between the schools and the university.
  • Field Supervisors – An educator who has completed TEA required training for observing student teachers in an Educational Preparation Program.  Field Supervisors have certification credentials matched to their candidates or are Principal or Superintendent Certified.
  • Mentor Teacher – A teacher in the field supporting a UTeach INTERN.
  • Professional Growth Plan (PGP) – The support tool created by a Field Observer when significant guidance is required to guide a candidate in their field teaching experience to meet program performance proficiencies outlined on the program observational evaluations.
  • UTeach INTERN – The candidate recommended for the UTeach INTERN Certification Pathway (ICP) and who is completing a full academic year teaching experience as a paid teacher in the school to complete their certification requirements.
